Violins For Sale: A Guide for Buying a Violin

by Ms. ViolinsForSale on Jul.09, 2011, under Violins For Sale

When you’re thinking about getting a new violin there’s a couple things you need to do first, like deciding what kind of violin suites you best and how much you’d like to pay for it. If you’re new to the violin, a budget violin will probably work well for you. Before you buy any violin though, you need to think about a few things. The following are the tips that I wish someone told me before I bought my first violin:

Many Stradivariuses are not authentic, they’re copies. That violin someone found in their attic is most likely not authentic.

Only buy from sellers that guarantee the quality of what they’re selling. Certainly, if you’re getting your violin online you’ll want to make sure you can return or trade your violin if it turns out to be of poor quality.

Labels are a good thing to look for on a violin, it’s good to know when, where, and by whom it was made. You have to know what you’re getting with your purchase.

You get what you pay for. Higher quality violins are going to be higher priced, you’ve got to pay for the value that you want.

It’s a good idea to avoid violins that have been mass-produced or made in a third world country. I’ve always found these kinds of violins difficult to tune, poorly put together, and therefore they’re tough to play properly.

If you find a violin that’s hard to play or where it’s hard to push down the strings, there may be too much room between the fingerboard and the strings. A 5-7mm distance is the maximum you should accept, any bigger and you shouldn’t buy.

Check for reviews from other people who have bought from this seller, especially if you’re buying online. Only buy a violin from a store you are comfortable buying from.

You’ve got to check the size! Full sized violins (4/4) are for adults and children need smaller ones. The violins is the correct size if you can turn the violin upside down, rest it under your underarm and along your arm, and still be able to get your fingers to touch around the top of the neck.

There are a couple of other things that you should keep in mind if you’re upgrading to a higher quality instrument. Always get a professional’s opinion on any violin you’re looking to buy, don’t just make an impulse purchase that you haven’t fully checked out yet. Some violins can look good, but need significant repairs that can be even more costly than the instrument was in the first place. It’s easy to upgrade properly, just following these tips and the ones I’ll talk about next.

You should ask the seller for valuation papers on the violin or get an unbiased third party to provide them. Make sure that this valuation is completed by a qualified pro or business; you can call them to ask for their qualifications. Don’t buy the violin if you’re not 100% convinced of the value as reported by the seller.

Always ask if you can test out the instrument (ideally for a few days or a few weeks) before you buy so that you can get to know the violin properly. Compare the violin you’re looking at with other instruments in the store or that you’ve seen elsewhere. How heavy is the bow? Do you like the tone? Are your fingers comfy on the fingerboard? Move positions? Play in high positions? You’ll spend a lot of time with your violin, so it’s smart to think about absolutely every aspect of how it performs before committing to it.

Here are some last tips:

·               The value of a violin usually increases over time, unless it gets damaged.

·               Nicer violins are out there, and I encourage you to upgrade as often as possible (assuming you can sell your old violin).

·               Only buy a bow if it feels right when you hold it and has a proper balance point.

·               Don’t forget about the strings, their quality is important. Strings can get expensive though, so pick up some intermediate level strings. They’re the perfect balance between quality and price.
